Background

Mochitsuki — the makin of pounded rice cakes — is when the community comes together to make mochi, pounded rice cakes associated with welcoming the New Year in Japan. The use of the cakes was meant to alleviate the need for cooking rice on New Year’s Day, when everyone was busy with the New Year festivities.
