Community Bon Odori in Balboa Park

As the centerpiece of the Obon Festival held at the Japanese Friendship Garden, Buddhist Temple of San Diego helps oversee the Bon Odori.

The festivities at the Japanese Friendship Garden run through the weekend, with highlights as follows:

Toro Nagashi , Friday, August 2. The Japanese Friendship Garden hosts the lighting of lanterns to honor one’s loved ones who have passed away (Toro Nagashi) in the Garden from 12 noon to 8 p.m. Garden admission is required.

Obon Festival, Saturday, August 3. In the Garden, from 11 a.m., to 9 p.m. are special exhibits and entertainment. Admission is required.

Bon Odori, Saturday, August 3. Our Temple joins the Garden to present traditional Obon dancing with its Bon odori, free to all, in the Spreckels Organ Pavillion. Entertainment starts at 4 p.m. with the Odori (dancing) to start at 6:30 p.m. Festivities are expected to end by 9 p.m.
