First Turn of the Wheel of Dharma

Second Session on
Basic Buddhism

     
Our special series continues with a review of how the enlightened Buddha presented his new understanding of reality in a discourse now understood as the first turning of the Wheel of Dharma.
 Please join us this Sunday, August 16, at 10 a.m., for a one-hour informal and low-key service. 
 Once the Buddha Became the Buddha

 We will look at the foundations of Buddhism, including such concepts as the three marks of existence, the three jewels, the four noble truths, and the eight-fold noble path. 
The Buddha's first discourse includes all the key concepts you will find in any formal introduction of Buddhism, whether online, in textbooks, college courses, or Buddhist Temples. 
These formal teachings provide insights into who we are and how we can live our lives.
Sessions last an hour. We will meet in the top floor of our air-conditioned main building, in our Hondo or main hall. The remaining second and third sessions will be presented by organizer Bill Teague, Certified Minister's Assistant.
We are happy to confirm that the fourth and final session -- in which we focus on steps you can take to apply what you have learned -- will be led by our Resident Minister, Rev. Sterling Davenport.  Many of you may know Rev. Davenport from his activities and leadership at the Vista Buddhist Temple in North County, before becoming the Resident Minister at the Buddhist Temple of San Diego.

Our four sessions cover the following topics 

1. Before the Buddha was the Buddha: Indic concept of Ahimsa; origin of middle way
2. First Turn of the Wheel of Dharma: Three Jewels, Four Noble Truths, Eightfold Noble Path
3. Suffering and the World of Samsara: Acceptance and Transcendence
4. Buddhas and Bodhisattvas: Dedication and Perseverance

Each service will have a minimum of ritual, a presentation, and time for questions.

Note:. Buddhism 1-2-3 is a weekly Zoom discussion class. Each Sunday service will be followed by the B123 Zoom that Wednesday at 7 p.m. — that is, August 12, 19, 26, and September 2. If you need the login, please ask the Temple.
