Third Basic Buddhism Service, Sunday, August 23, @ 10 AM

Suffering and How to Transcend Suffering
Third Session on Basic Buddhism

Our special series continues with a review of how the enlightened Buddha understood his primary purpose in this world. The session will again be led by Bill Teague, Certified Minister's Assistant. Learn more about the full series here.
These sessions are presented live and in person only. Please join us this Sunday, August 23, at 10 a.m., for a one-hour informal and low-key service.

Suffering and the World of Samsara

The historical Buddha is quoted as saying that his main goal is to teach about suffering and the cessation of suffering. We will look at the reason why we see ourselves -- if not deeply suffering -- at least uneasy in this difficult world.
The Buddha would teach that our tendency to see things as only good or only bad further drives our experience of this world as one of Samsara, an endless cycle of birth and death. You may sometimes also read Buddhist texts that talk of this "Saha" world, meaning the world of suffering and delusion.
Our discussion will lead to the Buddhist path that includes both acceptance and transcendence.

Sessions last an hour. We will meet in the top floor of our air-conditioned main building, in our Hondo or main hall.

Fourth Session: Living the Dharma

We are happy to confirm that the fourth and final session -- in which we focus on steps you can take to apply what you have learned -- will be led by our very own Resident Minister, Rev. Sterling Davenport.  Many of you may know Rev. Davenport from his activities and leadership at the Vista Buddhist Temple in North County, before becoming the Resident Minister at the Buddhist Temple of San Diego. If you have attended his Dharma talks before, you will know that he is a dynamic and powerful teacher of the Dharma.
By the end of this Sunday's session, we will have covered three big topics to better understand the Buddha and his teachings:

1. Before the Buddha was the Buddha: Indic concept of Ahimsa; origin of middle way

2. First Turn of the Wheel of Dharma: Three Jewels, Four Noble Truths, Eightfold Noble Path

3. Suffering and the World of Samsara: Acceptance and Transcendence
But in the fourth session, you will learn even more -- how to apply the Dharma in your life to walk with Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Please don't miss this final session
