Thanks to Neighbors -- More Parking Options for Obon Service and Bon Odori

We are grateful to our neighbors for helping us provide more parking for our guests at the Bon Odori on Saturday, August 2.

We are grateful to our neighbors to increase parking options for our Obon and Bon Odori. Parking will be available at the ARC of San Diego, some businesses along Market Street, and Kimbrough Elementary School. 

Please see below for participating businesses. Please park in one of these areas as identified, or on the street where permitted. Otherwise you may be subject to towing. Thank you for your cooperation.

NORTH SIDE OF MARKET STREET GOING WEST

  • ARC of San Diego (from 3 p.m.; gates locked at 10 p.m.) driveway may have minimal signage; just East of the 76 gas station/Rocket convenience store at 3010 Market St.

  • Napa Auto Parts, 2860 Market St.

  • United Fastener, 2852 Market St.

SOUTH SIDE OF MARKET STREET GOING EAST

  • Lutz Tires and Repair, 2817 Market St.

  • Ball Park Auto Body (do NOT block other cars when you park), 2855 Market St.

  • Carpet Cushion Company (after 1 p.m.) 2895 Market St.

SOUTH OF THE TEMPLE ONE BLOCK PLUS

Kimbrough Elementary School (gates locked at 10 p.m.), South of Island Avenue

  • Front of school, off Hoitt Street

  • Back of school, off Dodsen Street

GENERAL SCHEDULE (Includes Obon and Hatsubon Service before the Odori or dancing)

2:00 p.m. Combined Obon and Hatsubon Service in the Hondo
3:30 p.m.  Some Food Vendor will be open
4:30 p.m. Official start time. All food vendors should be open
5:00 p.m. Mr. Kinjo’s group Kinjo Ryukyu Minyo Kenkyusho - This performances will be held on the south side of the yagura (raised platform)
5:30 p.m. Ms Monji’s group Matsumae Kai - This performances will be held on the south side of the yagura
5:50 p.m. Taiko groups 
6:15 p.m. Dancers will line up in front of classrooms 4 and 5
6:25 p.m. The dancer procession will come out with the Hatsubon families in the front, making one full circle around the yagura and Hatsubon Families will prepare to hang their lanterns.  
6:30 p.m. Welcome and introduction, Bill Teague, Minister’s Assistant and Andrea Covarrubias.
Emcee will announce the first song and its meaning then the dancing will begin.
7:20 p.m. Taiko groups will perform at half time. Water and punch will be passed out.
7:45 p.m. Dancing continues 
8:30 p.m. Dancing ends, Thank you words from emcee, and closing Gassho
8:35 p.m. Jr YBA will start their Opportunity Drawing
8:40 p.m. Clean up will be under way
10:00 p.m. Parking lots will need to be closed
