at the Japanese Cultural Bazaar
Organizers of our annual bazaar are happy to welcome so many great artists, dancers, and musicians to join us for your enjoyment. Experience and learn more about the culture of Japan through our many performances and demonstrations.
Taiko - Be immersed in the sounds of the big taiko drums from three taiko groups, including BTSD Taiko, San Diego Taiko, and Naruwan Taiko.
Urasenke San Diego - Experience the Tea Ceremony or Chado (The Way of Tea) that focuses on harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility to create a meditative, aesthetically refined gathering.
San Diego Yosakoi - Find happiness in the performance by the energetic San Diego Yosakoi Kai as they dance in their colorful costumes, keeping the beat by clicking their naruko.
Edo Kotobuki Jishi – Be amazed by the traditional celebratory lion dance of Tokyo. Enjoy the amusing and skilled movements of the shishimai (lion) as he dances to the traditional accompaniment of live musicians playing the taiko and fue (flute).
Masazumi Koto Ensemble - Sit back and relax to the serene and beautiful music of the koto, a 13 stringed instrument, sounding similar to a harp, and an opportunity to try your hand at playing the koto.
Chura-Sanshin Group – Enjoy traditional Okinawan music with singing and dancing, accompanied by the sanshin, which is similar to a banjo.
Sumi-e - Be amazed as you watch artist Wendy Nakamura create a beautiful sumi-e painting, describing each delicate, purposeful stroke of her brush.
San Diego Kendo Bu – Be prepared as you watch the precise movements and power of Kendo, the way of the sword, a modern Japanese martial art involving sparring with bamboo swords, and sometimes audience participation.
Introduction to Shin Buddhism – Learn more about Jodo Shinshu Buddhism in an informal Question and Answer format from our resident minister, Rev. Sterling Davenport.
Bonsai — Watch seasoned bonsai gardener Fred Miyata for a live demonstration of creating miniature masterworks of nature.
