Obon on SATURDAY, Aug. 1, 2 p.m., with Guest Speaker, Rev. Y. Sugahara

HATSUBON/OBON SERVICE

The annual Hatsubon/Obon service will take place on Saturday, August 1 at 2 p.m. Join Head Minister, Rev. Sterling Davenport, along with the ministerial team as we honor the passing of loved ones since O Bon 2025.

Rev. Yuki Sugahara, Rimban (chief minister) of the Buddhist Church of Sacramento, will deliver his Dharma messages in both English and Japanese.

During the service, the temple will honor the memory of individuals who passed away since the previous O Bon with the lighting of a memory candle. Letters have been mailed to families inviting them to this special service. If you had a loved who one passed away since O Bon 2025 and a service was not officiated by a member of the ministerial team, and you would like to participate, please contact the temple.

Hatsubon families will have the opportunity to make a paper lantern in memory of their deceased loved one. Lanterns will be displayed during the traditional Bon Odori dance that will take place starting at 6:30 p.m. in the parking lot.

The entire Sangha and community are invited to dance in the Bon Odori, which opens at 4:30 p.m. with food vendors on site selling their yummy foods.

Note on Parking

Because our parking lot is devoted to the Bon Odori, please plan on extra time to find parking. Very soon detailed parking options will be posted. Please read to make your plans ahead. We sincerely appreciate your cooperation.
