See Our Scouts and Special Presentation of the Padma Award

With scouts and scout leaders in uniform, and a color guard setting the American flag. Sunday, February 26, will be a special event for our Temple.

Officiated by Rev. Laverne Shidou Imori, and chaired by our BTSD Scout Sangha, we gather to celebrate the Buddhist programs and awards available to the various branches of scout organizations in the United States.

Our special speaker will be Andrea Covarrubias, who will discuss her experiences in meeting the requirements to receive the Padma Award, through the Girl Scouts of America.

The service will begin with opening remarks by scout leader Ricky Cheeks, and a Flag Procession by the BTSD Scout Sangha, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance by scouts Cassidy Muraoka, the Girl Scout Promise by scout Andrea Covarrubias, and the Scout Law by Flynn Cheeks. We will also receive a welcome from scout leader Ken Muraoka.

Awards Presentation. Perhaps the highlight of the service will be when Rev. Laverne will have the honor of presenting Andrea with the Padma Award. At Andrea’s level in the Girl Scouts, she will be receiving the silver Padma Award. (Padma is Sanskrit for lotus.)

Who Is in the BTSD Scout Sangha?

While the Temple does not sponsor a troop directly, a subset of our members makes up the BTSD Scout Sangha. Temple adults and youth are active in various programs, including Scouts BSA*, Girl Scouts, and Cub Scouts. Over the years, our ministerial staff and volunteers have assisted youth in scouts to receive a variety of the Buddhism-related awards.

*In 2019, the former Boy Scouts of America became completely coed, a process begun as early in 1969 at the Explorer Scout level.

PLEASE JOIN US for this special service in which we celebrate our scouts and scout leaders.
