About Rev. Naomi Nakano

Rev Nakano was born and raised in Denver, Colorado. Her father was an Issei from Wakayama and her mother was a Nisei from Pasadena. Nakano Sensei grew up in a dual religious family, as her father was orphaned and adopted by a Catholic family and her mother was Jodo Shinshu. Sensei feels that she got to know both sides of the beliefs.

Nakano Sensei received a master’s degree in Buddhist Studies from the Graduate Theological Union (GTU) and the Institute of Buddhist Studies (IBS) in Berkeley. She studied independently in Japan for about a year and received Tokudo and Kyoshi ordination. Her first BCA assignment was the Gardena Buddhist Church, and after two years there she received Kaikyoshi status. Rev Nakano is now beginning her 11th year at San Luis Obispo and Guadalupe churches.

Nakano Sensei likes to cook, bake, and eat, which she learned from her father, who owned a cafe, her mother, and the two best neighborhood bakers that she ever knew. Sensei’s hobbies include reading mystery and suspense novels, and she creates and designs cards. She lives with her ginger cat named Shunki.

About Rev. Irene Goto

Rev. Goto is a Minister’s Assistant with Tokudo ordination. She became a certified Minister’s Assistant in the summer of 2011 and received Tokudo ordination in 2014.

“Through high school I attended a Christian church because there was no Buddhist temple near our home,” Nakano Sensei recalls. “In the mid 80’s when my daughter was in kindergarten she asked me to take her to this place called “church” so I decided to take her to the Buddhist Church.

“I was pleasantly surprised to find that what the ministers at Seattle Betsuin were teaching resonated with my views. I’ve been attending, participating, and listening ever since. I hope to help keep the Dharma resonating.”

Tokudo ordination is the first formal step of training to become a minister in the Jodo Shinshu tradition.
