SECOND OF THREE SPECIAL SERVICES ON BASICS OF BUDDHISM
SUNDAY, AUGUST 17
FIRST TEACHINGS AFTER ENLIGHTENMENT
Once the Buddha awakened to the truth of existence, the sutras tell us
that he was inclined to continue to live simply and alone to enjoy
his new-found spiritual peace.
But as the Buddha became who we recognize as the Buddha we know today, he was encouraged to share his teachings with others. His first discourse, the First Turning of the Wheel of Dharma, gave us foundational teachings central to all Buddhist branches, schools, and sects.
Sunday we will look at two in more detail --
the Four Noble Truths and the Three Poisons.
This service is designed to be both educational and spiritual. It will have a simplified format, with less ritual or music. Bill will introduce some common features of our weekly services and explain their role.
He will also identify some things we can all do to increase peace and calm,
and apply wisdom and compassion in our lives.
