BTSD Odori Dancers at Friends of Sumi-e in Balboa Park, March 23

Our Bon Odori Dancers continue to support community groups around San Diego with their lively performances.

On March 23, our Bon Odori dancers helped support the Friends of Sumi-E Annual Art Exhibition in Balboa Park with two timely dances, Sakura Ondo and Sakura Kappore. Thank you to Lead Instructor Junko Kajita for organizing our participation in the event and Instructors Ann Ong and Shirley Omori for leading the dancers. About Friends of Sumie-E (Adapted from the Website)

The Friends of Sumi-e is an art-based group in San Diego, California, dedicated to carrying on the tradition and teaching of traditional Japanese brush painting, called sumi-e or suiboku-ga.

This form of Asian painting seeks to capture the essence or spirit of a subject with elegant, well formed brush strokes, each purposefully loaded to create multiple tones of ink or color within a single stroke. It requires only ink (pine soot and glue) or color, rice paper, brush, and water.

Friends of Sumi-e was founded in 2023 with the merger of two brush painting groups, Washu-Kai, founded in 2000 and the Taka Sumi-e Society, founded in 2002.  The merged group has about 80 members.
