WELCOME TO the year of the Boar! Our Temple will celebrate the New Year this coming Sunday, January 13, following our Shinran Memorial Service (Ho Onko). The service is expected to end roughly at 11:45 a.m.

The party takes place in our Annex Hall, adjacent to the main Temple building.

Please join for the fun and entertainment; there may be one or two extra bentos (from Ichiban Hillcrest!) for sale for the lunch if you did not order previously or bring your own from nearby restaurants or drive-thrus. We’d still like to treat you to drinks for the toast and cake for desert!

Master of Ceremonies Glenn Torio will open the party by introducing a ceremonial Shigin, a traditional New Year’s song, and calling up our Toastmaster, Ruth Voorhies, for a hearty toast (kampai!) to the New Year.

Buddhist Temple of San Diego’s Got Talent!

The Temple wishes to thank our entertainers for the party, including

  • Sensei Koryu Morikawa, San Diego Shigin Kai, with “Poem of New Year’s Festival”

  • Buddhist Women’s Association, with a specially adapted lyric for the sing-along to

  • Dharma School students for a lively musical number

  • Robert Yamamoto with his musicianship and magical guitar

  • The BTSD Taiko Group with rousing ensemble drumming

Our Resident Minister Rev. Dr. Kenji Akahoshi will lead us in expressing our gratitude as we receive the meal (shokiuzen no gassho); Associate Minister, Rev. Tesshi Aoyama, Emeritus will lead us in our appreciation after the meal (shokugo no gassho). Before we’re done we expect to recognize our new members, our 88-and-Great Club, the centenarians in our Century Club, couples celebrating their 50th wedding anniversaries, and—with Board President LuAnn Lee—our gratitude to all of you for your generosity in the previous year, with gifts of your time and financial support, gifts that have allowed our Temple to continue as a spiritual and cultural resource in San Diego.
